I THOUGHT LONG AND hard before making the call.

“Hi Sarah. It’s Lucy. Can I talk to you for a minute?”

“Lucy! I haven’t seen you for nearly three months. When we had you both round for dinner. How are things?”

“I’d like to say ‘Fine’, but I’m really not sure. I need to have a girly chat with you.”

She paused for a moment. “Is it about Angela? What’s she done?”

“It’s about Angela, and she’s done nothing. Can I come round and talk?”

“Yes, but Jack’s around, and it might be difficult to get rid of him right now.”

“It might be good to talk to Jack, too, to have him as a sounding board.”

“O.K. See you here in twenty minutes?”

Angela was going to be out of the house all afternoon, and I judged it to be the most opportune time to speak confidentially to two old friends. I walked round to their home, which held a lot of fond memories for me; I had lived there, off and on, for nearly four years.

Sarah greeted me at the door with a kiss, and showed me into the living room. Jack was already there, thumbing through a pile of magazines; he stood, smiled and kissed me and sat down again.

“Good to see you again,” he smiled.

“But I gather it’s not entirely pleasure,” Sarah said to Jack.

“No.” I sat down. “Angela thinks I’m having an affair with someone. At least, I think she has that impression. How can I convince her that I’m not?”

“I’m not sure I’m the best person to answer. I’ve known her longer than anyone else I know from my schooldays. But, from the love angle, I’d be out of my depth here,” she said.

“Can I just establish something here, Lucy?” Jack said, putting his magazines to one side. “I don’t want to be rude or nasty, but I have to ask you something. If I were to unpick the language you just used, I might reach the conclusion that you were having an affair with someone and were looking for a means of covering it up.”

“But you are only being hypothetical there, aren’t you, Jack?” asked Sarah, taking a defensive line.

“Lucy has asked us how she could convince Angela that she isn’t having an affair. She hasn’t denied to us that she isn’t sleeping with someone else.”

They both looked at me for an answer. They wanted a denial.

“Well, Lucy? Are you seeing anyone?” Jack’s eyes pierced into my soul. He knew all about my past infidelities, my weaknesses and my sexual appetite. I remembered that we had had a conversation similar to this some two years ago.

“No, I’m not sleeping with anybody. But... well, I did have a day or so out with an old boyfriend a few weeks ago and...”

They waited for me to continue.

“Oh, it was messy. He says he still loves me, and I still want to be with him. But I love Angela. I couldn’t live without her now, and I’d never do anything to abuse her trust.”

“I think we’ve been here before, Lucy.
